Northern Lights Chasing with Aurora Holidays

Introducing Aurora Holidays

If your dream is to see the Northern Lights why not do it from the northernmost town in the EU? Aurora Holidays is a family business in the small Finnish town of Utsjoki and was the perfect setting for our hunt of the northern lights.

Where is Utsjoki?

Like most people, I had never heard of Utsjoki before. Located in Northern Finland in the Lapland region, this small town is a great destination for those looking to get away from it all and enjoy nature. Since Utsjoki is surrounded by nature it is the perfect location for northern light chasing. Unlike with other popular northern lights destinations where you can keep visiting without ever seeing the stunning light display, a week in Utsjoki in the winter months will almost guarantee you a glimpse of the lights. Of course nowhere can promise 100% chance!

The Cottages

The cottages at Aurora Holidays have all been recently built (some newer than others) and are equipped with anything you could possibly need during your stay. They have four identical cottages each with two twin bedrooms and a sofa bed so they can accommodate up to six people in each cottage.

Each room in the cottage have their own heater so everyone can have a temperature that suits them. The bathroom also has underfloor heating so no matter the weather outside you’ll never be cold in the shower! Best of all, each cottage is also equipped with their own private sauna. The saunas even have a timer so you can head out for three hours and come back to a sauna that’s already heated up ready for you.

Northern Lights Chasing

As Utsjoki is far away from cities with light pollution you don’t have to go far from your cottage to enjoy the lights. You can choose to simply enjoy them from the comfort of your own terrace. Of course it’s a lot more fun to go running around with everyone trying to spot them while new lights suddenly appear from the opposite end of the sky.

Worried about getting cold while waiting for the lights to appear? Don’t worry there is a fantastic little hut for everyone to wait in which has it’s own fireplace. Perfect for keeping warm on the cold nights or grilling sausages or marshmallows on an open fire.

Activities

While chasing the northern lights was the main reason for us heading to Utsjoki, it can only be done at night which means you have the whole day waiting for it to be dark enough to see them. Thankfully Aurora Holidays had lots of activities available to keep us prepared. With their help we got a chance to experience true Sami culture. We were lucky to take part in the following:

  • Snowshoeing
  • Husky sledding
  • Village tour of Utsjoki
  • Traditional Sami meal
  • Ice fishing
  • Reindeer racing
  • Visit to the northernmost pub in the EU

Why We Love Aurora Holidays

If you follow us on social media you will know that we absolutely loved our stay with Aurora Holidays. The staff were so welcoming and did everything possible to make our stay the best trip it could be. They instantly became part of our group. We were actually really sad to say goodbye to them at the end of the week.

Because Aurora Holidays is a small family run company they focus more on the guests themselves rather than just make as much money as they can. They altered the schedule to suit our budget.

They will happily drive the 2-3 hour journey to the airport to pick up guests just so they can take them to a supermarket to get everything they need for the week. Thanks to their thoughtfulness we all had the greatest week.

I’ve seen the northern lights from Northern Canada a few times but I’ve always dreamed of visiting Northern Finland, especially in the Lapland. It seems as close to a winter wonderland as you can get.

  2. I’ve been hearing such great things about Lapland! I live in Canada, so I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few places before like Yukon and Alberta.

  3. Northern Lights pictures are totally amazing! Having a private sauna in the cottage also seems like a cool idea!

  4. As a photographer, the Northern Lights are definitely on my bucket list. It sounds like you had an amazing time!

    • As a photographer you’ll probably have a lot of fun seeing the lights. There was just something exciting about trying to capture them on the camera that added to the experience

  5. This is such a fun vacation idea. Hot drinks and soup are definitely necessities for viewing the Northern Lights in winter. I got to see them for the first time ever in Iceland last month and we were pretty chilly.

    • Really you managed to see them in Iceland. Lucky you! I’ve heard so many people complain that they went to Iceland for the lights and were disappointed

  6. This trip is at the top of my bucket list! I love your photos and can’t wait to see the Northern Lights myself one day.

  7. Your photos of Finland reminds me of living in Alaska and watching the northern lights. Unless you have actually seen them it is hard to describe the beauty of the northern lights.

    • Yes people are now asking us to describe them and I think I’m failing miserably! They really are something that you need to see for yourself to truly appreciate

  8. Seeing the Northern Lights is very high up on my bucket list. Now if only I can convince my husband to join me in northern Finland in the wintertime.

  9. I have never seen the Northern lights. One in the bucket list. Thank you for giving a list of activities to do while chasing the those Aurora lights.

  10. I always wanted to see the Northern Lights! For now I’m training my husband to the cold weather, we’re not used to it and he isn’t very keen on spending time among the ice and snow! I’ll show him your article, it surely is convincing!

  11. Those little cabins are so cute! And who doesn’t want to experience the Northern lights? Sounds like a great trip! Aurora Holidays definitely seems to take care of you!

  12. I’m into photography and the Northern lights has been one of my dream captures. What I’m not sure of is whether I can still manage to take good photos when I witness it myself or would I just stare at this spectacle in awe.

  13. As you said, like most people, I have never heard of Utsjoki. Never really looked into a place that is the northernest most town. But it sounds like a wonderful place to visit! Seeing the Northern lights is high on my bucket list. I’ll have to keep them in mind!

  14. The northern lights are spectacular. Sometime I would love to make it up there if at all possible. That’s great that they have self-heated rooms and floors that are heated as well for the showers. I know I would need something like that for sure.

  15. Our Northern Lights planning is not really translating into action, since our longer vacations are always timed for October and I guess that is not the best season to go. But I’ve made a note of this post and hope to add it to my research for the year that we change our vacation time.

  16. There was a man from my home town who recently proposed to someone here and it made world wide news! I really hope I can get here one day, it looks magical

  17. Seeing the Northern Lights is on my bucket list! I really hope to do this one day. Your photos are amazing. I hope to do this same tour myself some time.

  45. Seeing the Northern Lights is a major bucket list item of mine!! And this looks like the perfect little place to cross that off. The only problem is I absolutely hate cold weather. 49. I have seen the northern lights in Alaska but I believe seen it in Finland with Aurora Holidays must be a very different experience. They look so beautiful in your photos and so does the region. Love how the Aurora Holidays offer airport pickups and take care of their guests instead of just making money.

  50. I haven’t seen the northern lights yet but it’s in my bucket list. They look so magical!
Need to save more money first so I can travel to Canada or Finland.

  51. One of the things we were so sad to miss while in Iceland was the Northern Lights. This trip looks fantastic! Love that each of the cottages had their own sauna… and that your view of the Northern Lights was just right out your front door! Thank you for sharing 🙂

  52. The Northern Lights are on my bucket list. Seeing them from Utskjoki would be amazing. The cottages at Aurora Holidays look like a great place to stay. I’ll have to consider them if I visit.

  53. Megan Jerrard

This is my dream! Utsjoki sounds like a great place to see the lights – I visited Rovanemi in Finnish Lapland back in 2007, during February, and we hiked for like 9 hours in the middle of the night up this mountain but turns out it was like the 5% of the winter which it didn’t come out. Just my luck right!! So next time I will be doing it right, and I love that you don’t have to go far from your cottage to enjoy the lights. Thanks for the tip on Aurora Holidays – I love that there are other activities to keep you occupied inbetween chasing the lights!

  54. You are so lucky to have experienced this. I have always wanted to see the northern lights and I hope I will one day.
